Elk Point council reaches agreement on pay

Elk Point town council has reached an agreement on the money the mayor and council will receive for their service.  Council has decided to go with the plan first brought up in an meeting in October of last year.  The mayor will receive $600 and council members will receive $400 in monthly honorarium, the same as it has been for the last three terms.   Other compensation will be allowed for attending various meetings and functions.

The debate began after a councillor suggested a different model of pay, including mileage being paid to meeting locations. That plan was defeated in a vote of four to one.

As it stands,  expenses can be tax free if they are paid with a cheque from the town.  in 2019, this is set to change, with the C.R.A saying “non-accountable allowances paid to elected officers will be included in their income.”
