Canada Post overhaul plans scrapped

The feds have decided community mailboxes and door-to-door delivery are both still in the future plans for Canada Post. In 2013 then Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his conservative government announced plans to end home delivery and transition to community mailboxes.

Wednesday Minister Carla Qualtrough announced plans to continue to door-to-door deliver service and home delivery will not return to neighbourhoods where the community boxes have already been installed. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says four million homes receive their mail via mail carrier while 800,000 homes across Canada use the community mailboxes. National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Mike Palecek says the Liberals were elected after making door-to-door mail service an election issue.

“At least today’s announcement is clear that the service cuts will end. But for close to a million people, it breaks the promise to restore door-to-door, and gives the crown corporation little direction on some major issues.”

Palecek says that the crown corporation couldn’t negotiate new services without government direction. Minister Qualtrough’s announcement asks the corporation to seriously explore new service options.

CUPW has made demands to Canada Post in regards to restoring door-to-door, greening the postal service, and service expansion. Bargaining talks between CUPW and Canada Post Corporation began in December.
