Peace officers urge safe winter driving

The recent dump of snow has prompted peace officers in Lac La Biche County to remind drivers of some basic winter tops. Residents are encouraged to check local and highway road conditions before their trip, and to drive to the conditions.

When the weather is bad like this, it’s also smart to let someone know the route you’re taking and when you expect to be there so they can call for help if you don’t make it. Keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle is another important tool, along with a way to call for help if you’re stranded.

Officers also warn drivers need to watch for black ice that can build up on roads and intersections as the temperatures drop. The ice can easily cause a vehicle to lose control. Wheel ice can often be unavoidable and hard to see when it builds up in driving lane.
