Imperial Oil continues cleanup of Cold Lake spill

Cleanup continues at an Imperial Oil spill in Cold Lake. The release of emulsion was reported on December 4th, 24 kilometres north of the town.

The Alberta Energy Regulator says there was an issue with a well, which has since been shut in. About 1,600 litres of heavy oil and 14,400 litres of produced water leaked, but no impacts to waterways or wildlife have been reported.

In a release, Cold Lake First Nation says it is working with the AER and Imperial Oil to come up with a strategy for remediation. It hasn’t been able to confirm or deny reports of how the environment has been affected.

Two other spills have been reported in the Cold Lake area so far this year. 900,000 litres of produced water overflowed from an onsite pond in April, and 25,000 litres of oil and 225,000 litres of condensate leaked at another well due to an mechanical issue in September.
