Rednecks with a Cause honoured with Premier’s Council award

Bonnyville’s Rednecks with a Cause Society has been recognized by the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. It received an Award of Excellence in Community as part of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd.

Rednecks with a Cause was formed in 2012 and still exists with its original founders and five parents that joined when it registered as a society in 2013. It raises money and awareness for Autism Speaks Canada, and wants to build an intervention centre for children on the autism spectrum.

In addition to fundraising events, the society also hosts speakers at local conferences, and creates learning opportunities for parents, aid workers, and school staff. It has helped all schools in the Lakeland improve their sensory rooms, which can aid students with autism in calming down and focusing.

December 3rd was officially claimed as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by the United Nations in 1992. It’s meant to increase awareness and understanding of disability issues, and create support for persons with disabilities.
