UCP AND LIBERAL LEADERS TO FACE OFF IN DECEMBER BY-ELECTION

Premier Rachel Notley has officially called a by-election for December 14 in the Calgary Lougheed riding. The seat opened after UCP MLA Dave Rodney announced his resignation November first.

When Rodney stepped down the intention then was for UCP Leader Jason Kenney to have a shot at his seat. Kenney was acclaimed last week as the nominee for his party.

“I am honoured to be the first United Conservative Party candidate for election to the Legislature, seeking the privilege of representing Calgary-Lougheed residents. I once again thank Dave Rodney for his selfless decision to make it possible for me to enter the Legislature to lead the opposition to the NDP government.”

Friday Liberal Leader David Khan announced he also intends to run in the by-election. He says he looks forward to the campaign which he expects will provide “rigorous debate”

“This is a referendum on the NDP government, which is failing Albertans. Our Liberal opposition will continue to hold them responsible for their poor policies that damage our economy, pile up our debt and drive investment capital from our province.”

“The UCP and its right-wing, intolerant values are not an option for Albertans.” Khan continued, “We do not want the clock turned back on social issues like GSAs. Neither do we want to suffer through massive cuts in public services.”

Dr. Phillip van der Merwe is the only candidate for the NDP nomination and is expected to be acclaimed this weekend.
