Auto Theft Up in Bonnyville, Pickup Trucks Targeted

Vehicle thefts are on the rise in the town of Bonnyville, and pickup trucks in particular seem to be a common target.

According to the latest report from the Bonnyville RCMP, the town and surrounding area had seen 66 thefts up to September this year. That’s a sharp increase over 36 at the same point in 2016, but a little bit less than the 71 seen in 2015.

During her quarterly report to council, Mayor Gene Sobolewski asked Sgt. Sarah Parke why pickup trucks in particular were so heavily targeted. Parke speculated that criminals may be doing their research and finding that trucks are easier to break into, or that buyers on the black market are looking for pickups specifically.
