This Week is Canadian Down Syndrome Week

People across Canada are being encouraged to “see the ability” during this years Canadian Down Syndrome Week.

“The week is meant to celebrate Canadians with Down syndrome and all of the amazing things they are doing all across Canada and to celebrate all of the abilities they have,” says Resource Coordinator Carlee Reardon.

According to the CDSS, approximately one in every 781 babies born has Down syndrome and there are currently 45,000 Canadians with Down syndrome.

“People with Down syndrome have many abilities and they are able to be really fully participating members in their communities. Lots of them have jobs, they go to post secondary education, they volunteer, they’re just contributing members of society,” says Reardon.

This is the second year in a row the CDSS is celebrating the week with a more Canadian focus, however the organization has been celebrating it for many years now. The week runs until November 7.
