Cyr Says Wildrose Party Didn’t Let Him Look at Finances

Bonnyville-Cold lake MLA Scott Cyr says he was blocked from seeing the then Wildrose Party’s finances for months, which have now become a problem for the United Conservative Party.

Cyr went public with his frustration after an article published by the Edmonton Jounral said the UCP was 337,000 dollars in debt and looking at laying off staff and asking MLAs to dip into their members’ services allowances to make up the gap. The Journal claims that almost all of that debt came from the Wildrose Party.

“I am very disappointed to have read about the Edmonton Journal’s article on the financial mismanagement of the previous Leader of the Wildrose Caucus,” Cyr said on his Facebook page. “As an accountant, and a good conservative, I believe it is important that we always operate within the confines of a responsible budget.

“This is an issue which I and others have questioned the budget disclosure process as well have been standing up for internally, because I believe ultimately it is the MLAs who are accountable for the budget. Unfortunately, time after time, I have been blocked from seeing the numbers to evaluate costs and budgets.

“Many of these questions remain unanswered, and I hope this attention will finally provide answers to the fiscal conservatives in caucus.”

Cyr also spoke later to the Journal saying the Wildrose party hired eleven staff members in the summer before the merger that neither he nor his colleagues knew what they did. Former party leader Brian Jean has since released details on those hires, which showed them to be legislative assistants, receptionists, community outreach staff and a part-time adviser to Jean among other occupations.
