A local man has a date with a judge after a Municipal District of Bonnyviile Peace Officer clocked him doing 202 km/h (or 125 mph) in a 100 km/h zone early Wednesday morning.
Director of Public Safety, Chris Garner, says the Peace Officer was heading to Cherry Grove via Secondary Highway 659 around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23 when he saw a pickup truck emerge from a fog bank. The Peace Officer observed the truck was driving at a high rate of speed near the intersection of Highways 659 and 892 and used traffic radar to verify the speed as 202 km/h.
Fines for speeding cut out after 50 km/h over the speed limit, which left the Peace Officer serving a Summons to Appear in Provincial Court in November instead of issuing a regular traffic ticket.
Garner points out the 100 km/h speed limit is for optimal driving conditions – sunny and dry. He also urges everyone to drive safely and follow posted speed limits, and to adjust driving according to weather conditions such as visibility limiting fog.
