Cold Lake had been hoping to get a Police Dog Service team in 2018, but it looks like they may have an earlier opportunity. A pair will be graduating from the training centre in Innisfail and could be posted in the city.
“This is an exciting opportunity not just for policing and public safety in Cold Lake, but for the entire region,” says Mayor Craig Copeland. “We’ve listened to our residents and know this is a priority and we did not want to pass up an opportunity to bring this service online as soon as possible.”
Council decided at a special meeting last week to pursue an enhanced policing program program that would bring the service to the city. The closest team is in St. Paul and it comes to Cold Lake if needed.
“We know that these two new members would very much be welcomed at the detachment and within the community,” adds Copeland. “We made the decision to bring a police dog team to the area to help ensure the RCMP in our region has a variety of assets available.”
A final decision is up to the federal government.
