Cold Lake City Council has voted to add a procedure that would recognize the city is on Treaty Six land before meetings.
The proposal was brought forward by Councillor Darrell MacDonald, who is of Metis ancestry himself. He told council that he hears the statement of recognition at a growing number of meetings and believes it to be a sign of respect. He added that the city has a growing indigenous population that isn’t living on nearby reserves and settlements.
Council ended up voting in favour of the motion six to one, and will now be starting the process of adding the recognition to their meetings.
