Cold Lake City Council has voted to add a procedure that would recognize the city is on Treaty Six land before meetings.
The proposal was brought forward by CouncillorĀ Darrell MacDonald, who is of Metis ancestry himself. Ā He told council that he hears the statement of recognition at a growing number of meetings and believes it to be a sign of respect. He added that the city has a growing indigenous population that isn’t living on nearby reserves and settlements.
Council ended up voting in favour of the motion Ā six to one, and will now be starting the process of adding the recognition to their meetings.
