New Recycling Technique for Mattresses Keeps Them Out of Landfills

A new recycling technique to get mattresses out of landfills is making its way to the MD of Bonnyville, and the town may introduce a similar program as well.

Town Councillor Jim Cheverie informed the rest of council about the new private initiative based out of Edmonton during his committee report.

“Since they started three years ago, last year they recycled between forty and fifty thousand mattresses,” Cheverie told council. “The foam, the fabric and the cotton from the mattresses go to Calgary and they are turn into underlay for carpets. Then the wood they chop they up with the staples in it into little bundles and sell it as firewood for three dollars.”

Cheverie added that mattresses are a particularly tough item for landfills to manage and a way to keep them out of there is greatly appreciated. “If you’ve ever been to a landfill, these mattresses and box springs are nothing but a horror show. You can compact them all day, all year, all decade, they will work back up with the frost and water and float on the surface. They’re one of the biggest nuisances a landfill could have. It’s nice seeing them out of the way stream.

The company is offering a program throughout Alberta where municipalities can fill a shipping container full of mattresses and box springs and they’ll take them away. Cheverie said that the MD will have containers for this purpose at three locations and that it might be something the town should look into next budget.
