Lac La Biche County’s support for one of the region’s largest and best-known festivals will continue in 2017.
County Council has decided to approve special events funding for Pow Wow Days, including in-kind support and allowing use of the recreation grounds near downtown Lac La Biche. The County’s direct financial contribution totals $30,000, including the finale fireworks show.
The County had previously suspended funding for the Pow Wow Days and Fish Derby Association while an audit of the Association’s finances was carried out. County officials have met with Association executives to discuss the draft audit report’s findings.
Since then, a new interim board for the Association has been established and stated its commitment to working with outgoing board members to ensure a smooth transition. The County has received information from the interim board, indicating the organization is taking steps to establish best practices for transparency and accountability.
“Council has supported Pow Wow Days from the very beginning, as it is one of our region’s largest and most beloved events,” says Mayor Omer Moghrabi. “We have a duty to ensure that community groups using public dollars are operating properly, and we now have renewed confidence in the Pow Wow Days and Fish Derby Association. Council and I look forward to seeing this year’s event.”
