Lac La Biche Hosting Tea Party To Bring Attention to Elder Abuse

Lac La Biche County is bringing awareness to elder abuse with a Seniors’ Garden Social next week.

Thursday, June 15th is Elder Abuse Awarenes Day. The county’s tea party marking the occasion is scheduled from 3 to 6 in McArthur Place and McArthur Park. Live entertainment will be provided by Burn N Mahn, an all request piano show.

Free transportation is available for seniors as well. Call 780-623-6745 for more information on that.

Elder abuse is a growing problem in Canada and in Alberta in particular. It is estimated that although up to 10 per cent of seniors will experience abuse, only 20 per cent of victims will go on to report it. Of these, victims were most likely to be abused by a grown child or an extended family member. Alberta has the third highest rate of senior abuse among the provinces, with an incidence of 83 per 100,000.
