Alberta snow plows are out in full force this winter season

More than 600 snowplows have been working day and night on Alberta’s highways to clear roads for motorists.

Alberta highway maintenance crews have been ready to tackle anything that old-man winter can throw at them since early October, and were on-call and prepared for this most recent blizzard. Using satellite radar information and GPS technology to identify priorities and current snowplow locations, crews are able to mobilize faster than ever before.

With more snow in the forecast and lots of winter ahead, Alberta Transportation and maintenance contractors are ready to clear provincial roads and highways all winter long. Plowing occurs first to remove as much snow and ice as possible, then any remaining snow and ice is treated with sand, salt or a combination of both depending on the conditions.

Albertans can do their part to drive safely this winter by: Checking road conditions before they travel at 511.alberta.ca or via Twitter @511Alberta to get the most up-to-the-minute information on road and weather conditions
