Cold Lake Penguins Showing Kids The Ropes of Rugby With Big Brothers and Sisters

The Cold Lake Penguins Rugby Football Club is hosting a Big Brothers and Big Sisters event on April 22nd, showing kids the ins and outs of the game.

“We’re estimated to have about twenty five kids ages eight to twelve – both boys and girls – get an introduction to rugby.” says Penguins President Dave Brown. “What we’re really excited about is it gives us a chance to expose our members – men women and our youth clubs – to get involved in volunteering, participate in mentoring these kids and give back to the community. We think it’s a win-win for everybody.”

The club will be setting up a table at the front entrance of the Energy Center to promote the sport, the club and the event to the public. The public is welcome to stop by to learn more if interested.  The session will be held from 11 – 1:30 pm at the Cold Lake High School gym. It’s the first time the club has worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Brown says it was a member of the team that set them up.

The Penguins are gearing up for a new season. The first Men’s game is May 6th in Edmonton and the first home game is June 3rd. The women’s club is generating a lot interest around the region as well.

“There’s groups from Edson, Fort McMurray and Lloydminster that are also partnering so that they can bring rugby to their females in their communities,” says Hare.
