Cold Lake Officers Hand Out Gift Cards Instead of Tickets

Cold Lake Peace Officers, RCMP and Cold Lake Community HealthServices teamed up for some “positive ticketing” at Assumption School and the Energy Centre today.

As part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the officers held traffic stops at both locations focusing on young drivers and making sure they were using good driving habits. Those that did got a Tim Hortons Gift Card.

Community Peace Officer Robert Mercer said the operation was a huge success. “All the drivers that we came across today were demonstrating good driving habits. Everybody was buckled up and things like that. Pretty much everybody that we stopped drove away with some goodies.

“We also spoke with some adults as well coming out of the Energy Centre and informed them what was going too. Education went a little bit beyond the 16 to 24-year-olds.”

60 stops were made throughout the day, 50 of whom were young drivers. Mercer adds that there will be similar stops set up in different areas of town over the next while.
